Dear curly-haired friends, I’m so glad your curiosity led you to my site. Before I share my experiences with natural curls on this blog—and hopefully get to read about yours as well—I’d like to tell you a bit about my story and the journey I took to embrace my natural Afro curls.
I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. In my home country, people start straightening their hair at a very young age; hair that isn’t straight is considered unkempt. So I, too, grew up with straight hair. It wasn’t until many years later, far from home, that I began to reflect on my heritage.
The birth of my first child was the deciding factor in my decision to embrace my natural curls—a step that felt radical to me. I want my children to see me for who I am: a Dominican woman withAfrican roots. The decision felt radical because I completely shaved off my straightened hair.
I wanted a fresh start with no transition. I’ve never regretted this decision, and I love my curly mane. Of course, I had to learn how to care for these natural curls, since I really had no idea about this new world and had to figure it out for myself. That’s how I began to rediscover my hair.
When I was younger, I learned a lot about natural skincare products, so it was clear to me that I wanted to care for my curls naturally as well. I started researching what natural curls need, how to wash them, and how to make them manageable. I’ll share the recipes that have won me over with you here; and I’d love it if you’d also share your favorite DIY recipes with us curly-haired folks
