My dear curly heads, your curiosity has led you to my site. Before I share my experiences with natural curls with you on this blog and hopefully read about your experiences too, I would like to tell you a bit of my story and the path I took to my natural Afro curls.
I was born and grew up in the Dominican Republic. In my country of birth, hair is straightened from a very early age and hair that is not straight is considered unkempt. So I also grew up with straight hair. It wasn't until many years later, far away from my home country, that I began to come to terms with my origins.
The birth of my first child was the deciding factor for me to take the radical step to natural curls. I want my children to see me for who I am, a Dominican woman with African roots. It was a radical step for me because I shaved off all my straightened hair.
I wanted a fresh start without a transition. I have never regretted this step; and I love my curly mane. Of course, I now had to learn how to care for these natural curls, as I really had no idea about this new world and had to discover it first. So I started to rediscover my hair.
In my youth, I learned a lot about natural products for my skin, so it was clear to me that I also wanted to care for my curls naturally. I started researching what natural curls need, how to wash them and how to comb them. I will share the recipes that convinced me here with you; and I would be happy if you also share your favorite DIY recipes with us curly heads.
