Application:
Shampoo:
Use the shampoo as often as needed, but as infrequently as possible. The general guideline is 2 to 6 times a month, but every curl is different, so find the right rhythm for your curly crown.
If you tend to shampoo more often, focus the shampoo on your scalp and hairline. This cleans the roots and removes the body’s natural oils without over-drying the ends (the older hair).
Conditioner:
Conditioner is probably the most important product in the shower. It seals the hair cuticles and, at the same time, locks moisture into the hair. This helps make your curls easier to comb. After all, it’s the tangled cuticles that can make combing your curls such a chore.
On days when you don’t shampoo your curls, use conditioner to rinse them out. Rinse with water, work the conditioner through with your fingers, detangle (comb) the curls, and rinse.
As a general rule, always finish your shower with conditioner!
Despite all its benefits, you should never apply conditioner (or styling products) to your scalp, as the desired effect on the hair—closing the hair cuticles to make styling easier and retain moisture longer—is not at all desirable for the scalp. In this case as well, the conditioner would close the pores of the skin, which can cause itching, dandruff, or excessive oiliness of the scalp.
Leave-in:
This leave-in product helps define and clump curls while moisturizing the hair. Apply the leave-in to damp or towel-dried curls. To do this, rub a small amount between your palms and work it through your hair with your fingers, re-defining the curls as needed. Finally, scrunch (not for Afro hair). Scrunching helps your curls take on an even more beautiful shape.
To give your curls more life and movement, start applying styling products about a hand’s width away from your scalp. Especially with finer hair and wavy or curly textures, this will help your curls stay in place more easily.
Mousse Use the mousse to set the curls defined with the leave-in product. Rub the mousse between your palms and comb through the curls with your fingers.
